How to Become a Football Coach

Becoming a football coach is hard work, but this article it will help you understand what it takes to attain your goal.

   Understand that becoming a coach takes dedication, commitment, and time. For high school, you will need a BS degree with teaching credentials, majoring in physical education. Here are some of the different levels of coaching:

   • Junior leagues, such as local sports associations sponsor for different youth groups. These do not require higher education, but will require you to pass screening sometimes require you to help defray the cost of supporting your team.
   • Jr High School and High School coaching positions are difficult to get, and will usually require you to hold a teaching position at the school, as well as your coaching duties. You may find you have to begin as a defensive or offensive coordinator before becoming a head coach.
   • College coaching positions are almost impossible to attain unless you have played football at least at the college level.
   • Professional league coaches work the majority of their lives, from playing at college, and even professional levels, then working their way up through the system.

   Plan on going to college, and majoring in Physical Education, and if you are able, playing on the college team.

   Study the sport of football, learning the game's intricacies and nuances at an intimate level. Study films, the history of the sport, and the lives of the game's greats, like Bear Bryant and Tom Landry, for example.
