Steps
-
1Consider the image you want to project. Brainstorm with team members around how you'd like others- competitors and fans- to see you. What do you want come across as? Fierce? Peppy? Fun-loving? Noble? Old school? Quirky? If your team has a sponsor, be sure to include them in the brainstorming process.
-
2Determine if location is a factor. If so, will you use your area or town's actual name (eg. Chicago), or nickname (eg. Windy City)?
-
3Decide if you want your team to be easily searchable online. If so, you might include the name of the sport in your team name. For example, the Hockey Hurricanes, or the Bay Area Bowlers.
-
4Be sure your name is original. Do your homework and check online to ensure the name is not already taken. If there is another team in the same sport in your area or state, choose a name that is different enough that people won't confuse the two teams.
-
5Generate a list of name choices. Take some time to think about the best name choices- don't make an on-the-spot decision. With input from all stakeholders, put together a list, then narrow it down to the three or four most popular choices.
-
6Request feedback from people you trust. Bounce your final choices off friends or colleagues with good judgement to see what they think. This will help you get an outside perspective.
